I love those first 2 FOW albums and they were one of my favourites long before they became an overnight success with Stacey’s Mom (incidentally I put that in the box labelled “biggest hit but worst song” alongside Pretty Fly for a white guy)
It was Radiation Vibe that hooked me too, some B-sides from the singles (Uk releases) were amazing too…Comedienne, Can’t get you out of my head and one of my favourites Kid Gloves
This is such a great song. I bought this cassette when it came out because it was billed as "Sounds like Weezer!" I was disappointed because I wanted them to BE Weezer (not fair of me, but what can you say for being fifteen). They were something else, and while I never became a superfan (though I actually LOVE "Stacy's Mom"), I appreciate their stuff and their sound quite a lot. This song, in particular, is a real gem, and the perfect blend of warm, fuzzy guitars and clever lyrics.
Welcome Interstate Managers is my fave US power-pop concept album of all time (you could probably delete either of the two descriptives and it would still be number 1) but they made a hell of a debut too. Thanks to both of you for breaking down specific lyrics too. And much as I love both those albums (Utopia Parkway not quite as much), I especially love these discussions you are having with your daughter. I have similar ones with my son about music - not the same, similar - and wish he'd sanction them to become posts also. Thanks for sharing... and yes, the kids love Big Thief.
Also, Goddamn that was rough losing Adam at the start of Covid. NOt a fun fact, but his was the first Covid death - at least the first hospitalized one - in my county.

Definitely a Radiation Vibe I’m grooving on!!
Heck ya! They really found their own lane fast with that debut single and album.
I’d forgotten how much I loved this album!
So great!

I love "Stacy's Mom" too! Undeniably great song...but definitely not their best song.
This song will never not stop me in my tracks. One of my all time faves, and tbh, defines that mid-to-late 90s era for me.
I’m with you!
very cool project to do with your daughter!
Thanks man! It has been a blast.

Thanks, Tony! I am having so much fun with these discussions.
And I couldn’t agree more about WIM. I wrote and talked about it a lot last year (for the 20th anniversary): https://rememberthelightning.substack.com/p/song-x-song-welcome-interstate-managers
