I can't believe I had never heard that Silver Sun album. It's fantastic, and right up my alley. As for other albums from 2005, I don't know how you feel about OK Go's "Oh No", and their well-known track "Here It Goes Again" (and the incredible video they made for it), but I like the entire album and think it qualifies, for me at least, as hooky guitar pop.

OK Go was on and off the list. Great call!

Another honorable mention of an album from 2005:

"New Comes and Goes" by Oranger. The track "Garden Party for the Murder Pride" has an "early Sloan" vibe to my ears. https://open.spotify.com/track/57zWAGbqFk3XAKegjIV116 . I'm also a fan of the title track.

2nd’d on Fountains of Wayne, I’d add Spoon Gimme Fiction and Franz Ferninand “You Could Have It So Much Better” as well

By no means a guitar pop album (but maybe you stretch the genre to include Off The Record and Anytime) but My Morning Jacket Z is from 05 and one of my fave rock albums of all time and kicked off an ongoing 20 year love affair with the band

Just a brilliant year in music. Great choices. Reminded me of Silver Sun. Just for that… Thank you.

Great list. Twin Cinema and Man-Made are two albums from this year I still go back to often, along with The Hold Steady’s Separation Sunday and Silver Jews’ Tanglewood Numbers.

I love the top three and was not exposed to the bottom three. So I will now be revisiting and basking in the sounds of those top three as I begin my search to obtain the bottom trio. Thanks, Steve!

Pretty much wore out the CD of The 88's album - those first three songs especially, on repeat. All of these are fantastic, but somehow missed Silver Sun, so thank you for this and for highlighting that we are all rapidly aging. 20 years ago??!!

Ha! Tell me about it. I played on a record that’s (gulp!) 25 this year.

Wasn't familiar with the Silver Sun or The 88, so I gave them a listen. Liked the latter more than the former, but both earned at least another listen.

Twin Cinema is my favorite New Pornos album, Man-Made was the first I bought from Teenage Fanclub in real time, and the Benson is great. Plus, lots of strong songs on the FoW compilation.
