They really were larger than life. I only saw them once- on the Road To Ruin tour- after buying the yellow vinyl! They were great and did more songs in the encore than most bands do in a full gig. And their encores only lasted 20 minutes. Because of the contract with Newcastle City Hall, they had to play until closing time, so they needed encores to fulfil their contractual obligation. Great stuff!
As many of those books that I've read, I never got around to "Commando" mainly because I didn't wanna "support" Johnny. It's on sale for Kindle for $3.99 right now, & I guess since he's not around anymore there's nothing to "support". Maybe now's the time, finally.
I read Johnny's and Marky's books. I feel (politics aside) I have a soft spot for Johnny. A workhorse, serious, horror movie lover, who had to be tough to keep things moving. He was necessary, no matter what you think of him as a non-Ramone. All of our heroes are troubled in their own ways. Johnny was just unapologetic about it. I cant wait to dive into Monte's book, so thanks for the rec.
Totally get it. I have the softest spot for DeeDee, but after 'Lobotomy' I'd probably say 'Commando' was my second favorite. Johnny pulls zero punches, but you do get a better understanding of him.

Amazing! I am absolutely LOVING these trips down '70s/'80s punk/post-punk memory lane that you've been posting lately.
Cheers! I'm enjoying dredging up the memories!

It is honestly great.
I went ahead & pulled the trigger.
