Great read about a great song - this sentence hit home for me "I switched through genres and sounds within those genres until I found myself between lyrics and beats." Perfect wording on finding the bands and music you love. Just perfect.
I really enjoyed this and am pleased that Lucy dug Ready Steady Go. Generation X were very much underrated at the time and generally dismissed by the UK music press.
I honestly had no idea what she would think, but it's fun to watch her get slowly exposed to punk through her friends.
I was always fascinated by how Generation X got treated by the press...I mean, they were maybe a little *too pop* for the punks (Billy Idol certainly made his intentions clear when he went solo)—but the songs and recordings are totally undeniable. For my money, the self-titled Generation X debut is a Top 5 UK punk album of all time.
Generation X were repudiating the other punks who pretended to despise the Beatles, The Stones, The Who -- instead saying they loved the records they heard as children in the 60s.
This album is the bridge between 60s guitar pop and 70s punk.
I agree and I think that's why they were so important to my own musical development. Like, when I heard them, I finally started understanding what my own musical tastes were.
I saw Gen X at the end of the '70s. The venue was notoriosly rough and the shabby dressing room was notoriously cramped. They had to convert the cloakroom into a private dressing room for Billy because he had so many female guests ... top band!

Thanks, man! I’ll pass along the kind words to Lucy.

Bought that album circa 1980. A huge favorite.
