I Did The Dirty Work So You Can Maintain A Sense Of Dignity

Let’s start by addressing the elephant in the room—these power pop memes are clearly some kind of cry for help.

In my defense… well, it’s honestly indefensible. So, I guess it’s time to just own it until I get the validation, attention and social media shares I crave.

I think this was the first one I made:

We power pop fans love to debate each other.

Those debates can sometimes get a little heated, especially among the extremely knowledgable diehards often referred to as “power pop purists.” It’s usually meant to be fun—we start off loving similar styles of music, after all—but arguing about which bands do or don’t qualify as power pop can be absurdly humorous at times.

And here’s the most recent one I made:

This one revolves around a similar theme, but with a dash of Wonkatastic condescension thrown in. I know the timelines don’t necessarily work, but I like to think that Gene Wilder’s Willy Wonka would have been a Jellyfish fan, in part because the band name itself evokes Swedish Fish—power poppers do love candy metaphors. And also because of his foppish manner of dress which one assumes must have been a partial inspiration for the band’s cartoonish fashion sense (along with Dr. Seuss and Redd Kross). Anyway, Jellyfish was an über-talented early ‘90s San Francisco group that played sophisticated pop inspired by psychedelic-era Beatles, The Beach Boys, Badfinger, Cheap Trick and XTC, among other legends. They’re great, but you’ve probably never even heard of them… SEE? THAT KIND OF CONDESCENSION. BRUTAL, RIGHT?!

Sorry to trick you like that, I just sometimes feel like my humor goes over people’s heads which is probably why I dumb it down to funny pictures and pithy one liners—OHMYGOD! I JUST DID IT AGAIN.

Enough with the sarcasm.

I’m sure you get the idea.
